Guns are again on everyone’s mind all over the world. We went back to a broadcast we produced in 1992, “Guns and Violence,” a prescient and powerful but depressing hour of THE 90’s PBS series.

Is it worse now? We’re afraid so. There are about 100 million more guns in the USA than 23 years ago.

Even though more than a million people saw our program, it definitely didn’t reverse the trend. The firearms industry contributes more than $33 billion to the U.S. economy and supports about 263,000 jobs. That’s more than double the North American employees of General Motors.

And business is booming: shares of Smith & Wesson are up nearly 400 percent since 2010. One statistic we didn’t know is that the top 3% of gun owners have more than 25 guns.
