Happy 100th birthday, Studs Terkel!

Tomorrow will be the 100th anniversary of Studs Terkel’s birth, and we have big news!

1. Film and Video Fest: save the dates
2. Mediaburn.org public beta launched
3. Terkel birthday parties around Chicago on Wednesday.

We have some great things in store for the Studs Terkel Film and Video Festival. We will announce specific lineups and special guests in a few days. Until then, save these dates:

June 2, Chicago History Museum, 10am, 12pm, 2pm

June 8, Nightingale, 7pm

June 17, Chicago Cultural Center, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm

All of these screenings will be free and open to the public.

If you head over to mediaburn.org to check out our 250+ video Studs collection, you may notice it’s pretty different… today we launched the public beta of our new site! Check it out, and please let us know what you think! We will launch the full site in September 2012.

The Studs Terkel Centenary Committee and others have organized a few parties to celebrate the day tomorrow.

Newberry Library, 5:30pm reception; 6pm program, free

Celebrate the centenary of Studs Terkel with writers, activists, reporters, historians, and artists Terkel inspired. Alex Kotlowitz, Alison Cuddy, Penelope Rosemont, Alma Washington (as Lucy Parsons), Steve Mosqueda and Sean Benjamin, David Roediger, and Ed Sadlowski will reflect on how this expansive and generous public figure moved them and shaped their work.

Heather Radke, a freelance audio recorder, will share clips of people who have shared their own memories of Studs Terkel. Bucky Halker and Jon Langford will provide music. Come and remember Studs together, with good stories, music, and food.

Chicago History Museum, 6:30pm, $10 members / $15 public

Join our 100th birthday celebration for Louis “Studs” Terkel, one-time historian-in-residence at the Museum and one of the nation’s most treasured oral historians. WFMT Critic-at-Large Andrew Patner explores Studs’s life, legacy, and contributions to history through radio and TV clips from his 75-year broadcast career.

WFMT radio, 1-7pm

WFMT honors one of its own and one of its greatest. May 16 brings the 100th anniversary of the birth of Studs Terkel. We’ll mark the occasion with rarely heard programs, music and interviews fresh from the archives of the Chicago History Museum – with some material not heard since its original broadcast. Tune in from 1-7pm for a non-stop Studs-thon full of delights and surprises.
