    Pop Video Test IV: Entertainment, parts 1 and 2

    “The Pop Video Test” was a joint effort between Scott Jacobs and Tom Weinberg of the Chicago Editing Center, and the Video Group of the Bell and Howell Corporation. This cooperative effort between the independent video community and a corporate video distributor was intended to test the viability of the home video market. The videomakers assembled ten hours of video pieces meant as an alternative to available pre-recorded programming (ie Hollywood movies). Fifty VCR owners in the Chicago area agreed to examine and review the tapes. Test viewers then received the programming two hours at a time, in groupings labeled Video Art, Documentary, Entertainment, and Potpourri.

    A study of colorful Chicago author, radio personality, and raconteur Studs Terkel. The program contains footage of Terkel from the 1950s through 2000, when he was 89 years old. Terkel expounds on various topics such as work, art, media, himself, his political views, his family, and his colleagues.

    This tape features and episode of “Time Out,” a weekly sports program that is hosted by a number of Chicago area journalists and sportscasters.  This week’s commentators are Kenny McReynolds, a WBMX Sportscaster and Assistant Coach for DePaul University’s Men’s Basketball team, Rick Telander, a Chicago-based writer for Sports Illustrated, WIND reporter Fran Spielman, and broadcaster and former NBA star John Mengelt.  Gary Fencik joins the group later in the tape.

    This tape features audio-only footage of Jesse Weinberg as a eight month old baby. It is followed by footage of a group of construction workers replacing a telephone pole in an alley somewhere in Chicago.

    This tape features footage from a party at videomaker Tom Weinberg’s home in Chicago. Party goers are seen celebrating with one another in the small apartment. The last quarter of the tape includes raw footage inside the Erie Cafe for the documentary “It’s a Living.”

    This tape contains footage of videomaker Tom Weinberg conducting on the street interviews with Chicago residents in the mid-seventies. The audio is fairly poor throughout the video.

    This tape features footage that had been taped off of Los Angeles and Chicago TV stations during the production of TVTV’s “Adland.”

  • Hiring Line

    The video contains a 1972 pilot for “Hiring Line,” a show dedicated to making job listings available to the public. The show offers viewers the opportunity to call and inquire about the jobs, as well as presenting general consumer information. This is a black and white copy of the program.
