This is a tape of a series of still images and baseball cards shot for a documentary called “Veeck: A Man For Any Season.”
A recording of the ESPN Classic program, “Sports Century.” This episode is a documentary about Bill Veeck, former owner of several baseball teams, including the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox. The documentary is mainly comprised of interviews with family, friends, and colleagues of Veeck, along with narration over still photos, period interviews, and newsreel footage.
This tape features a 1984 episode of “Time Out,” a weekly sports program that is hosted by a number of Chicago area journalists and sportscasters. This week’s commentators are award winning sports columnist John Schulian, WBMX Sportscaster and Assistant Coach for DePaul University’s Men’s Basketball team Kenny McReynolds, WIND reporter Fran Spielman, and former NBA star John Mengelt.
Part one of an interview with Ken Holtzman, retired Major League pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees, for the television special, “Once A Star.” The interview, conducted by Roger Wallenstein, focuses on Holtzman’s career after baseball as an insurance administrator. Holtzman discusses how being an ex-ballplayer is sometimes a disadvantage in his career, and comments in-depth on “dumb jock syndrome.” Timecode onscreen.
