    This video contains raw footage shot for “Five Day Bicycle Race,” a project comprised of live in-studio commentary and taped edited coverage of the 1976 Democratic National Convention in New York City. Produced by independent videomakers calling themselves The Image Union (including many members of TVTV and Videofreex), it aired on Manhattan Cable for three hours per night for five days during the convention. In this video, videomaker Skip Blumberg interviews a number of New York residents about the DNC, politics, and their lives growing up in the premier city in the U.S.

    In this raw tape, Skip Blumberg shoots on the streets of New York for The 90’s, asking people about the upcoming presidential election. At the same time, Danny Schechter and a camera crew shoot Skip for a Globalvision video training tape. Most of the tape is Skip shooting Schechter’s crew as they interview him. Skip gives simple and clear explanations of the principles that guide his shooting (i.e., one should not look through the viewfinder but should instead learn to shoot without thinking about it).

This footage was shot for a segment called “What the El?,” where host Judy Markey approaches random people on Chicago’s elevated train and asks them questions. This tape features Markey doing introduction set-ups for the segment, and 7 good guessers play the game.

    Raw footage shot for the TV series The 90’s. Skip Blumberg goes around the streets of New York taping everyday people and some of their thoughts. A portion of this video shows some of his family life. A larger portion is concerned with the performance of a cheerleading-type routine by a group of girls, which Blumberg has called “The Street”; there are several takes of this spanning about a third of the footage. The recordings take place outside the Marcy Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. On a subsequent tape, the group is called “The Champions.”

Most memorably, a man who has lived on Taylor Street for over 60 years reminisces about being a precinct captain and expresses his loyalty to Richard J. Daley while his companions eat Italian Ice.
