[Jane Byrne offends Puerto Ricans in campaign]

Jane Byrne's 1987 mayoral campaign hits a snag when she includes Puerto Ricans among various "aliens" such as Cambodians, Laotians, etc.

She announced her own plan for a crack down on drugs. She says Chicago’s population has been growing from an influx of “alien” immigration from Cambodians, Laotians, Koreans, and Puerto Ricans. Opponents picked up on this faux pas stating that Puerto Ricans are US citizens. Puerto Ricans lashed out saying we are not aliens we are human beings.
