Last week, American actor and political activist Ed Asner passed away. While renowned for such roles as Lou Grant in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Asner’s life can also be seen as a microcosm of the way in which the American Left found a radically mainstream voice at the turn of the 21st century. Long before Democratic Socialism and Bernie Sanders were acceptable dinner table conversations, Asner proudly accepted the label of socialist, expressing a sharp skepticism of the mainstream political establishment. To honor his legacy, Media Burn is sharing a brief clip of Asner “indicting” the American press during a segment in filmmaker Bob Hercules’ 1990 film Did They Buy It?, in which Asner expresses cynicism about the level of corporate control over the US media.
