“We need to understand how the media and politicians divide us all…”

Democracies around the globe are in peril as systematic disinformation campaigns divide well-meaning communities and wear away public trust.

Widespread protests around the world have led to state crackdowns on free expression.

Here’s how Media Burn is fighting back. We have been creating international partnerships of journalists, media makers, students, and teachers to investigate and speak out about media distortion and how it damages democracy in all countries.

More than 300 people gathered in St. Petersburg in June for our sold out event.
We started this alliance between concerned colleagues in St. Petersburg, Russia and Chicago to push back. By convening groups of Americans and Russians, we are able to create a space for understanding about the common threat we all face.
We need your help to make this happen.

In the coming months, we plan to:
  • expand the discussions about media manipulation to more cities across the US and Russia
  • collaborate with Chinese filmmakers who are building an archive of oral histories that contradict government narratives
  • team up with universities to expand the dialogue on fake news

Scene from Media Burn-produced film, Ghosts in the Machine, made possible by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Here’s what people are saying about the project and its impact:

“In the contemporary conversation around U.S.-Russian relations, much attention is paid to governments as an extension of the people, with little regard given to how regular folks from each country understand their counterparts in the other. A starting point for bridging that chasm could be found in Ghosts In The Machine, a collaboration of Russian and American filmmakers commissioned by the Chicago film group Media Burn Archive.”–Maxwell Courtright, Tone Madison, 9/26/19

“I think everyone needs to see this film. We need to understand how the media and politicians divide us all, and that fundamentally, we all–Russians, Americans–are in the same boat.”–St. Petersburg resident, 6/22/19
