Guerrilla Television

Extent: 1240 videotapes

Dates: 1969–1979

Description: The Guerrilla TV movement was a rebellion against the norms and constraints of broadcast television. Videomakers, equipped with Portapaks, sought to challenge the cultural values of the time and unite people by making cinéma vérité style documentaries, which were made available to the public. The subjects of these videos vary from politics to art and media events but all with the intention of presenting stories that allow people to shape their own beliefs outside of the influence of established media.

Five Day Bicycle Race

Extent: 90 videotapes

Dates: 1976

Description: Raw footage and the final cut of a documentary made at the 1976 Democratic National Convention in New York City by the video collective Image Union. Originally produced as a live 3-hour cablecast for five days during the convention, it was subsequently broadcast on WTTW and other PBS stations. It chronicles the events in and around the convention, and includes interviews with various delegates, politicians, members of the media, and people connected to Jimmy Carter, including Rosalynn Carter and Jeff Carter (Jimmy’s son). It also includes footage from the convention floor and demonstrators outside the convention, led by Ron Kovic.

Description: A program following several Chicago radio personalities and examining the business of radio in Chicago. The program contains footage of the personalities at work (both on the air and off the air) and follows some of them during their time outside of work. Other people interviewed include various station managers and executives as well as Chicago radio critic Robert Feder. Some personalities featured include: WGN ‘s Bob Collins, WGCI’s Tom Joyner, WBEZ’s Dick Buckley, WXRT’s Terry Hemmert, and WLUP’s Steve Dahl, Gary Meyer, Kevin Matthews, and Jonathon Brandmeier.
