Judy Hoffman

Judy Hoffman

Description: Judy Hoffman is a Chicago-based videomaker whose work spans traditional documentaries, ethnography and ethnographic film, environmental racism and ablism, environmental awareness, and cinéma vérité. Her substantial involvement in the 1970’s Alternative Television Movement included, but was by no means limited to, the formation of Kartemquin Films. Kartemquin was a documentary filmmaking group centred around “Cinematic Social Inquiry”. Such social inquiry certainly manifested in Hoffman’s work as well.

Hoffman was the first female Camera Assistant in Chicago, and has been the recipient of several awards, including the 2004 Nelson Algren Committee Award, given to community activists who make a significant contribution to Chicago life. Our collection includes footage of the People for Community Recovery, an anti-environmental racism organisation, as well as the 1974 Housestaff Association (HSA) strike.

Our complete collection of Judy’s work can be found here.
