In-class activities

  • Using computers, each student is assigned a different clip to watch and answer the following question about their clip.
  • Students share with the class, in their role of reporter, their partner’s job description and how their interviewees feels about their job.
  • As an alternative to this activity, students can illustrate a page of that person at work or make a collage and write a short description to share with the class.
  1. What job does the person have and how long have they worked at that job?
  2. How does they feel about her job?
  3. What kind of skills are needed for the job?
  4. Does the job seem difficult?
  5. Would you like to have that job?
  6. Would they like to have a different job?
  7. With a partner, students interview one another. One student acts as the reporter and the other as the worker.

Homework activities

  1. Interview a relative, friend, neighbor, etc. about their work. Write a one to two page description of their life or day based on the interview. Include photos or illustrations. Interviews can be collected into a book and shared.
  2. Record the interview using a digital video device (smart phone, video camera). The teacher sets up a class blog to share the videos and written reports.
  3. Pick one of the stories and write a creative short story about a day or two in their life. Stories can be collected into a book and shared.
  4. Each student takes the answers to the questions from the in-class exercise (above) and writes a brief description of character.
