On July 29th, in collaboration with the University of Chicago’s Department of Cinema and Media Studies, Media Burn hosted video essayist Kevin B. Lee for a screening and discussion of his works The Spielberg FaceThe Essay Film: Some Thoughts of Discontent, and Once Upon a Screen: Explosive Paradox. An incredibly prolific filmmaker, Lee has produced an astonishing 360 video essays, leading the New York Times to pronounce him “King of the Video Essays.” The event was moderated by media scholar Allison de Fren.

Kevin B. Lee is a filmmaker, media artist, and film critic. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In his short films and documentaries, Lee often criticizes the medium of film and the film industry. Over the last ten years, he has produced over 360 video essays. His award-winning film Transformers: The Premake screened at several festivals and was named one of the best documentaries of 2014 by Sight & Sound. He regularly works together with filmmaker and media artist Chloé Galibert-Laîné and they have presented their collaborative works at IFFR, True/False Film Festival, Open City Documentary Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival and London Essay Film Festival, as well as art venues such as the Ars Electronica Festival and the WRO Media Art Biennale.

Allison de Fren is a media maker/scholar and the chair and associate professor of the Media Arts & Culture Department at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Her documentaries and video essays have been screened internationally and published in a variety of on-line journals. She has recently published the article “From the Essay Film to the Video Essay: Between the Critical and the Popular,” in which she discusses Lee’s work.
