Join our board of directors

Are you looking for a meaningful and rewarding way to give back to the community and meet new people? Do you want to help ensure that the stories of diverse communities are preserved, made accessible, and used by future generations?

Our story: Media Burn Archive is a Chicago-based nonprofit founded in 2003 that preserves and distributes more than 8,000 videotapes created by artists, activists, and community groups. Our mission is to use archival media to deepen context and encourage critical thought through a social justice lens.

Why now: Media Burn is leading a national initiative called the Guerrilla Television Network. The goal of the project is to uncover and elevate the voices of women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, differently abled, and other groups who historically had less access to the tools of production and mass distribution. The project is leading to deeper partnerships with our community, dramatic expansion of our collections, and immersive public programming.

Our board: Our current board of directors includes 10 members who represent a range of fields, including filmmaking, television production, education, scholarship, business strategy, PR, and nonprofit leadership. Most live in the Chicago area but we have members from around the US.

What makes you a good fit: We have specific needs for people with backgrounds in fundraising, law, and accounting, but sometimes what helps us most is people with a magical mix of a passion for our work and a drive to help.

Responsibilities and expectations: Board members are expected to attend quarterly, 60-minute meetings that can be attended virtually. They are expected to provide guidance and assistance according to their own skills and resources. The total time commitment is generally around 1-2 hours per month. We expect board members to provide an annual financial contribution at a personally meaningful and sustainable level, which is different for every person and remains confidential.

Media Burn does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, board, clients, and partners.
