On the floor of the convention center at the 1980 Democratic National Convention. Delegates are interviewed. Most of the delegates, predictably, praise Rostenkowski. Marty Russo, a congressman for Illinois’ 3rd congressional district, and an Illinois Delegate, describes how valuable and powerful Rostenkowski is to the party. Bob McCary, another delegate, talks about why Rostenkowski isn’t as well known as other congressmen, saying Rostenkowski doesn’t seek publicity. Mary Zolora, another Illinois delegate, says that she would like to see Rostenkowski run for mayor of Chicago. Ed Rosewell, Cook County Treasurer and Illinois delegate, says Rostenkowski will eventually be Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Continue reading

In this tape, Rostenkowski discusses air travel while on a United Airlines flight to Chicago. He tells a story about getting to Chicago’s Midway Airport from his home on Chicago’s Northwest side (he had to take two trains and a cab to get there). He goes onto discuss the benefits of the seniority system in congress. He also says that he would like to get rid of the TV cameras in the House of Representatives because House members tend to use the TV coverage as an opportunity to “get some free TV time.” Continue reading

He discusses the withdrawal of Senator Edward Kennedy from the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. He also discusses the challenges of running the convention. He says the most challenging aspect of running the convention is keeping the media satisfied. At just after eight minutes, someone in the convention hall apparently sets off some firecrackers, startling both Rostenkowski and the camera crew. Continue reading
