He talks about representing Dr. Quentin Young, who had filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago regarding the protest buffer zone around the United Center during the 1996 Democratic National Convention. “What we’re interested in doing is facilitating speech by all persons during the Democratic National Convention,” he explains. “The city’s resources should not be directed toward facilitating only the speech of the Democratic Party.” The conversation turns to security issues that the city is trying to mitigate by instituting a 3-block buffer zone around the Convention. “It’s a matter of providing the broadest forum for speech for all people, limited only by valid security interests.”
