Cape May Composite

This tape contains two pieces created for the weekly TV show "Are You There?" They focus on the environmental and political problems within the town of Cape May, New Jersey.

00:53Copy video clip URL Cut to a shot of a wooded area during winter. Forceful synths can be heard in the background as we see various outdoor shots. A conversation can be heard in the background as we watch footage of a large steel tower surrounded by a barbed wire fence. We see a person walking down the road along a grassy path near a wire fence in the country.

04:33Copy video clip URL Cut to a shot of a large waterfall. We quickly cut back to footage from a country road. The videomakers shoot from inside of a moving car, with music. The videomakers eventually make it to the highway and gather footage from a toll booth. Another track of audio is brought into the mix and consists of a conversation presumably being held by the videomakers. There is also a track from a radio program that plays in the background. The lasts for several minutes.

10:21Copy video clip URL Cut to a shot of shrubbery. A narrator talks about the beauty of the environment. “There is an internally recognized beauty of motion and balance on any healthy planet. You see in this beauty a dynamic, stabilizing effect essential to all life. Its aim is simple: to maintain and produce coordinated patterns of greater and greater diversity.”

11:51Copy video clip URL Cut to a shot of a construction site. A building is in ruins as construction workers make their way around the premises.

12:37Copy video clip URL Cut to footage of an interview with a man about his residence. He talks about the many renovations he and his roommates have planned. The videomaker gathers footage from around the residence. This lasts for several minutes.

15:16Copy video clip URL Cut back to shots of trees and shrubbery as the narrator talks about the “fluid stability of the ecosystem.” Eventually the camera operator gets a shot of the narrator.

16:28Copy video clip URL Three people rescue a bird from the ocean. The bird is covered in oil. We watch as the people carefully clean the bird. This lasts for several minutes.

21:00Copy video clip URL We watch as a duck walks along a road over to a body of water. Upon arriving at the water, we see a large groups of geese floating in the water. This lasts for several minutes.

23:24Copy video clip URL Cut to a shot of Congress Hall in Cape May. A tour guide takes a group of tourists through the town to view some of the area monuments. This is followed by a group of young members of the Coast Guard fraternizing with one another. They speak with the videomaker about their experience in the Coast Guard. This lasts for several minutes.

28:05Copy video clip URL Cut to an interview with Cape May Mayor Garbery about the town. He talks about his satisfaction of making “tremendous changes for the betterment of the city.” The videomaker talks about the closing of the local day care program. A woman then also comments on the sudden discontinuation of the day care program.

29:54Copy video clip URL Cut to footage of a musician performing a song for the camera. Armed with an acoustic guitar, the man sings from a top a large mound of sand as the ocean waves crash in the background.This lasts for the remainder of the tape.
