This video contains raw footage shot for "Five Day Bicycle Race," a project comprised of live in-studio commentary and taped edited coverage of the 1976 Democratic National Convention in New York City. Produced by independent videomakers calling themselves The Image Union (including many members of TVTV and Videofreex), it aired on Manhattan Cable for three hours per night for five days during the convention. In this video, videomaker Joel Gold speaks with a number of delegates and convention employees on the floor of the DNC in Madison Square Garden.

00:14Copy video clip URL Fade into a shot of Joel Gold adorned with his a/v equipment hoping to speak with a number of delegates. We watch as a group of convention aides hold a briefing session. As this takes place, the camera operator gathers footage from around the convention hall. There is an army of chairs set up on the main floor, soon to be filled with a throng of delegates later that day. Gold speaks with a convention aide about their work. Aides keep order on the convention floor by restricting people without the proper credentials from coming onto the floor.

Gold quickly moves on and travels to the convention floor. He notices a large group of Madison Square Garden ushers who just posed for a group photo. Gold speaks with a few of them about their work at the DNC. An usher named Clarence briefly speaks with Gold. Another man talks about their work at the convention and criticizes the congestion on the floor.

The woman states that Carter is “the best man in the race.” She also talks about her experience in New York and the caucuses. Gold then continues to make his way around he convention floor. This lasts for several minutes.

One woman adorned in a slew of Carter paraphernalia talks about Carter’s possible presidency. “I admire his honesty, his morality, and his aspirations for this nation.” Another woman expresses her confidence in a Carter victory.

Another woman states that she likes Jimmy Carter because he’s put forward a positive image for the country. “We are hoping to find a person who is honest, who seems to want to do something for everybody, all people in this nation, and this concerns us very much. We don’t want an exclusionist for our president. We want somebody who’s concerned about all of the people and he seems to have indicated that he is going to be concerned about all of the people.”
