[The 90’s Election Specials raw: Kansas City debate #2]

Raw footage for The 90's election special. In Kansas City as Bill Clinton's team prepares for the first of three presidential debates. This tape features an interview with campaign manager James Carville as he eats an ice cream cone in a mall food court.

01:05Copy video clip URL A man from the Clinton campaign is interviewed by a news camera, and he talks about defeating Bush based on the economy.

04:00Copy video clip URL The press is informed that they will be allowed to tape Bill Clinton in his hotel room. A crowd of 15-20 people goes up to the room and photographs Clinton signing papers at a desk while he pretends to be alone. The press is then asked to leave.

08:02Copy video clip URL The press just mills around the lobby, waiting for Clinton to appear.

11:30Copy video clip URL Clinton walks through, greets people, signs some autographs, and answers a few questions from the press surrounding his actions during the Vietnam War.

17:35Copy video clip URL George Stephanopoulos does a press conference (Jacobs’ camera is not plugged in to the feed from Stephanopoulos’ microphone, so it is relatively hard to hear). Stephanopoulos talks about Clinton’s record with respect to the Vietnam War. He calls the allegations “unsubstantiated” and attributes the actions of the Bush campaign to weak campaign tactics.

24:26Copy video clip URL Jacobs and Weinberg interview the man who will play Perot in Clinton’s debate prep. “Perot will probably take the position that he’s above this, these two men squabbling.” He also talks about how he studied to be Perot, by reading but also “crawl[ing] into his psyche.” He goes on to discuss the structure of the debate, and the respective advantages of Clinton and Bush.

37:20Copy video clip URL Tom Weinberg interviews campaign manager James Carville eating an ice cream cone (one scoop of French vanilla) in a mall food court. Weinberg asks him questions about debate prep and Clinton’s intellect. As for the difference between a good campaign and a good presidency, Carville says he knows nothing about the actual office. Carville mysteriously does not eat the cone.
