Bubbly Creek is the moniker given to the south fork of the south branch of the Chicago River near McKinley Park. The tour docents travel along the Chicago River where, in the times of stockyard operation, carcasses, manure, offal, blood and other detritus from stockyard production were disposed into the river. Following years of decomposition on the river bed, this refuse begins to emit a gaseous discharge (carbonic acid gas) that results in visible bubbles on the river’s surface. After a visit to the river to witness the surfacing bubbles, tour docents then recite a selection from Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle.
