Chicago teachers have gone on strike 11 times since 1969

The Chicago Teachers Union plans to vote at 6pm today to end a 10-day strike. The deal is contingent on Mayor Lori Lightfoot agreeing to allow the lost school days to be made up, which she has not yet agreed to do.
Chicago’s teachers have gone on strike 11 times since 1969. The longest strike, in 1987, went on for 19 days.
This video from 1975 documents full-time teachers and substitutes on the picket line. The 11-day strike resulted in restoring proposed teacher job cuts, reductions in class size, a cost-of-living raise and reduction of clerical work by elementary school teachers.
It was shot by Judy Hoffman as a member of Kartemquin Films. Judy used the primitive 1970s technology of portable video to quickly and cheaply record footage of labor action and coordinate with other groups.

We recommend reading the Chicago Tribune‘s detailed history of every Chicago Teachers Union strike.
