The Palace Grill: A “High Class Greasy Spoon”

Constantine “Gus” Alpogianis recently passed away at 84, leaving an indelible mark on the Chicago restaurant landscape. In honor of “Gus,” we take a look back at his debut restaurant, the iconic Palace Grill.

Gus became a co-owner of the Palace Grill that sits on West Madison Street in 1955. His cousin, George Lemperis, and other family members purchased the Palace Grill in 1979, and Lemperis operates the restaurant to this day.

This video was shot by Skip Blumberg, and aired on Chicago Slices in 1993. Following the tradition Gus started, George emphasizes hard work and giving people “what they think they deserve.” If the number of pleased regulars is anything to go by, George’s philosophy has been highly successful.
