Who was Win Stracke? Co-founder of the Old Town School of Folk Music, lifelong friend of Studs Terkel and regular cast member on Studs’ Place, keeper of the memory of the Haymarket, WLS Barn Dance performer, and the guy tapped to write new verses for the state song when Illinois turned 150, among many, many other things. “Country and Midwestern” at The Hideout is series of events culminating in the centennial of the WLS National Barn Dance and inspired by Mark Guarino’s Country and Midwestern: Chicago in the History of Country Music and the Folk Revival (University of Chicago Press, 2023).
