    [The 90’s raw: men against violence, building demolition, Letelier]

    Raw footage for the award-winning series The 90’s. The first section of tape is from the Brother Peace event, where people are gathered to stop violence against women. Strangely, the group seems almost apathetic about the subject, even though they have gathered for the purpose of acknowledging it. Various speakers get up and complain about rape, sexism, pornography, etc.

    The second part of the tape shows a building demolition at night, and Becker fruitlessly asks people about the building the next day. The widow of Orlando Letelier, Chilean ambassador to the U.S. during the Allende administration, who was later assassinated by the U.S.-installed Pinochet regime, talks about the political history of Chile as it affected her life. She explains the history of Chilean politics and her own involvement in feminist politics in Chile and the United States.

    This tape features raw footage for the award-winning series “The 90’s.” Videomakers Jody Procter and Judith Binder visit Midnight Mission, a soup kitchen and advocate for the poor in Los Angeles. They interview employees about how the meals are prepared, and speak with a few of the patrons about their situations. However, their main focus is the food, and most of the tape concerns the process of making and serving it. In contrast, Procter and Binder visit Asylum, an extremely upscale restaurant. The owner talks about his influences, the cuisine, and the decor. They also talk to the pastry chef and bread baker and watch the head chef, Guy Leroy, prepare an unusual salmon dish.

    Raw footage for the award-winning series The 90’s. A recording of a live performance of “Milly’s Orchid Show,” a variety show at the Park West in Chicago, starring Brigid Murphy. Murphy emcee’s the show in the character of Southern Belle Milly Mae Smithy for this live comedy / variety show. Performers/performances include: House-O-Matic, a teenage dance group; Lisa Kotin, who performs an instructional parody, “Spring Training: Miss America”; an unidentified, young teenage boy who sings a provocative R & B song, during which he strips off his shirt; comedian Emo Philips performs his typically eccentric stand-up act; the Texas Rubies, a female duo, perform a comedic rap and some country songs; and a performance by musician Jim Lauderdale. [The same footage is captured on another tape, but with a static camera.]

    Raw footage for the award-winning series The 90’s. A continuation of footage of a live performance of “Milly’s Orchid Show,” a variety show at the Park West in Chicago, starring Brigid Murphy. Murphy emcee’s the show in the character of Southern Belle Milly Mae Smithy for this live comedy / variety show. Murphy’s Milly Mae character introduces the members of the band, then introduces comedian Cheryl Trykv, who performs as a self-obsessed coffee shop dweller. Murphy returns to sing a song, then the show ends. Shot with a mostly static camera.

    Raw footage for the award-winning series The 90’s. No sound for the first 19 minutes. A satirical piece conceived by Doug Michels featuring a mock meeting of fundraisers for the Money Man Monument, a skeleton in a suit placed in a plastic tube of money on Washington D.C.’s Mall–“a permanent tribute to green power and the American Way.” This tape has multiple takes of the actors performing.

    Raw footage shot for the award-winning series The 90’s. This tape features footage of Rev. Jesse Jackson on the streets of Washington, D.C. during the May 1991 Washington D.C. riot, also called the Mount Pleasant riot. It is followed by an interview with lawyer Alexa Freeman of the ACLU National Prison Project about incarcerated women.
