  [United Nations rally with Angel Cristobal Rodriguez in New York part 3]

  This tape features footage of an outdoor rally that took place a day before Puerto Rican Nationalists Oscar Collazo, Irving Flores, Rafael Cancel Miranda, and Lolita Lebron were to be released from prison in 1979. Collazo attempted to assassinate President Truman in 1950, while the other three were convicted for opening fire in the House of Representatives in 1954, wounding six. The sentences of all four were commuted by President Jimmy Carter. The rally took place in New York City near the United Nations building.

  This tape features footage of a New York City community meeting on Chicano struggles and police brutality. Activist Emilio Benevides addresses a large crowd about the perils of “police terrorism” in their community, made up primarily of people of Puerto Rican descent. His speech is followed by a Q & A session.

  This tape features footage from a National Liberation Armed Forces (FALN) support rally in the late 1970s. Pedro Archuleta, Julio Rosado, Luis Rosado, and Maria Cueto appear on the tape.

  This tape features footage of a demonstration in New York City against police brutality. Activist Emilio Benevides addresses a large crowd about the perils of “police terrorism” in their community, made up primarily of people of Puerto Rican descent. This is followed by numerous street interviews with supporters, including an interview with Benevides. Benevides had ties to the National Liberation Armed Forces (FALN).

  Aspects of Demise: The Whole Earth Demise Party

  This video documents the Whole Earth Catalog Demise Party held at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Creator Stewart Brand organized the event to debate the best use of the twenty thousand dollars profit held by Whole Earth. Various individuals lobby for serious and satirical causes, including Paul Krassner. Followed by a segment with Brand on the Dick Cavett Show.

  Sam’s Cafe: A Media Inversion

  This tape documents the activities of and media response to the Sam’s Cafe Three (David Schier, Marc Keyser, and Terri Keyser), a group that created several dramatic publicity stunts in order to demonstrate that the new way of protesting effectively should be by utilizing the media itself. The group sent out fake utility collection notices to 20,000 people in the Bay area with the return address of a local TV station and also sent excrement to local news media offices. Sam’s Cafe member Marc Keyser explains, “This is a work of art and it’s a sample of the inversion of mass media. Now this has begun and it stopped. Next time when the inversion of mass media begins, it will not stop.” It is an exciting and humorous look at a moment in time when the one-way flow of information through television was under heavy critique and the new technologies of portable video cameras and cable television seemed to offer an alternative.

  A behind the scenes look at the 1973 Miss California Pageant and the state of the feminist movement. By the early 1970s, pageants had become a target of feminists and the organizers and contestants found themselves facing protests and scrutiny from the media. Optic Nerve presents both sides neutrally, allowing the clueless pageant community to make the feminists’ case for them.
