People pictured onscreen include: Virgil Grillo, Dee Dee Halleck, Dee Davis, Jon Alpert, John Schwartz, Bill Kirby, Lillian Jimenez, Tom Weinberg, Jim Martin, Steve Pearce, and Woody Wickham.

Women protest outside Hill and Knowlton, an advertising agency that was representing the Catholic bishops in America in their campaign against legalized abortion. They march and give speeches stating their opposition to Hill and Knowlon’s actions and try to pressure the firm to drop the account.

    Murder of Fred Hampton, reel 1

    Documentary about the death of Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party. The film started out as a simple portrait of Hampton and features lots of footage of his powerful speeches. However, in 1969, Hampton was murdered in his bed at the Panther headquarters by the Chicago police. The event was extremely controversial as the police and the Black Panthers told drastically different versions of the events. The film became instrumental in proving the Panthers’ story that the police broke in to headquarters without warning and killed Hampton without resistance.

Works include “…Living in the City” by Bill Chayes, “The Quickie” by Moving Memory Films, “Judy” by Rosalie Loewy, “Seamus” and “Octopus’ Garden” by Dean Kendrick and Chip Scoglio, and “Justice for Joe Torres” by Betsy Martins.

    [Studs Terkel in two industrial films]

    Two industrial films from the 1940s and ’50s that feature Studs Terkel. In “Beginning to Date” (1953) Terkel plays a high school diving instructor and offers advice to students on proper dating etiquette. The second film on this tape, “No Vacancies” (1946), is about the crisis that plagued many returning WWII soldiers who could not afford housing. Terkel is the narrator in this piece.

    Raw footage for the award-winning series The 90’s. Activists demonstrate in the streets of San Francisco demanding more research to fight AIDS. The camera is pretty passive and the sound is bad, so it’s pretty hard to tell what’s going on; the tape is mostly just shots of police and people standing around shouting.
