    Know Your Enemy – Japan

    Part of the Global Perspectives on War and Peace Collection. A WWII U.S. War Department orientation film using racist, anti-Japanese propaganda techniques. The film gives a brief history of Japan, and an overview of Japanese social, military, and political culture, with the ultimate goal of explaining that the whole  Japanese culture is designed to create soldiers bent on world domination. It uses typical War Department technique of narration over newsreel and stock footage, and dramatic re-enactments.

    Part of the Global Perspectives on War and Peace Collection. In December 1989, videomaker Andrew Jones was in Panama, working on a documentary about President Manuel Noriega. On the eve of the interview, the U.S. invaded Panama amid rising tensions between the two countries. The United States had been claiming the Noriega was a drug trafficker and dangerous to America. Jones spends time with the everyday Panamanians as well as Panamanian government officials, and as a result, becomes increasingly suspicious of the portrayal of the invasion by the U.S. government and media. The documentary includes powerful on the ground footage during the U.S. attack.

    A compilation of various news broadcasts from the night of January 16, 1991, the night the U.S. launched “Operation Desert Storm” against Iraq. Footage includes President George H.W. Bush’s address to the nation. Also, each network has several correspondents reporting from various U.S. and Middle Eastern Locations, including Baghdad. Most of this footage, although repetitive, is quite compelling. There are, however, some moments of complete absurdity when the reporters have nothing new to report.
