Archival footage of Studs Terkel. First piece is a look at the circus narrated by Terkel. Followed by two episodes of the show Studs’ Place, which was broadcast out of Chicago from 1949-51. It featured improvised comedy and some jazz performances.
Raw footage for Chicago Slices. This tape features part one of a roast for steelworkers union leader Ed Sadlowski. Friends, family, and co-workers gather at Local 65 Union Hall to celebrate Sadlowski’s retirement. Studs Terkel talks about the Chicago labor history, and the legacy of the union movement.
Documentary about a sit-in conducted by Harvard University students in 2001 to protest the low wages of Harvard employees. The sit-in lasted 21 days and eventually resulted in the adoption of a living wage of at least $10.83/hour for university employees. The cameras follow both the students occupying the administration building and the activity outside. We also get interviews from the Harvard employees involved in the strike and news coverage of the event.
Mayoral Commercials by Lynn Sweet. This tape collects many of the political ads from the 1983 race for mayor of Chicago. The ads are shown in approximately consecutive order. First there are the ads for the Democratic primary race between Jane Byrne, Richard M. Daley, and Harold Washington, followed by ads from the general election between Harold Washington and Bernard Epton. Many of the ads are smears, so it is interesting to see them in close succession responding to each other. Includes ad featuring Studs Terkel for Washington.
Jim Abbola interviews Studs Terkel. They discuss Terkel’s most recent book, Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times, and the ideal of hope in American society.
Studs Terkel in conversation with Harry Kreisler, producer of “Conversations with History.” Introduced by Dave Eggers and the students of 826 Valencia. Kreisler interviews Studs Terkel—or rather Terkel unfurls a multitude of inspiring and humorous anecdotes, with Kreisler occasionally managing to interject—before a captive crowd at the University of California at Berkeley.
